~~~~~~~~~The Puppy, The Star, and The Angel"~~~~~~~~~~By Caroline E, Sullivan~~~~~~~~~
Angel my Gaurdian, carry me fast, carry me,
carry me, carry me,
all that I have to give you is my love,
all that thee canst bear---
There is an old stoy high above,
Where you and I in thickets we shall dwell---
(And mayhap in the story, my question tell)
....I dreamt
I were alone upon a star,
and that I a pup, a puppy dog,
and that I very young, and sentenced there to die.
Or live, alone, among a world of stone, for
neither meat nor drink needst I,
but only a place to lie my head,
--and thee, an angel, by!---
I dreamst that as I wandered round
the world of the distant star,
burnt our and ne-er to return,
as planets (for twas a dwarf star)
I wandered lonely as a cloud
and found a place to cry,
to lay me down in thickets wild
for surely I should die--------
(and never to know why!)
Or how far away my cry twas heard---
For as I sleeping lay,
And angel so magnificent,
the coming of the day
was flying through the vacant void
and heard my puppy cry,
and fell to flying to the star
Where I a-trembling lie.
My nose was wet
my ears did flop;
my fur was colored blonde;
and though I could not warm myself,
warm my hear did run.
Did feel, did cry, did flop about,
For puppies need a home--
I had no need, I fear, to touch
my cold and awful home.
Indeed, until the angel came,
twas Lost and all alone.
And thus condemned to perish there,
I cried and sniffed and barked and feared,
One day I ventured Out.
Twas there I found me in a gully,
and water all around, and I was
loth to touch that ice for it did make
a sound, and--
that sound was of breaking glass
and so I wandered round.
I prayed to find a meadow green,
to nestle my soft hair,
yet found a bridge of land to cross
the stormy waters there.
Twas cold, cold, marvelous cold,
Twas wonder that I lived.
For loneliness I could have died;
my heart beart innocent.
-----
I crossed a causeway made of stone,
I crossed it on all fours,
I crossed the sea of bony fish---
Twas glowing seas of Mars\
I found a mountain capped in snow,
twas fearsome off afar,
and the caught sight a fisherman,
did fish on that pale star.
Did fish, and a propitious fish
he fished, with line and reel,
all sad and made of stone he was,
and cold, and did not feel.
------
I hie me under yon starry bank,
for wanting of a friend,
The man of stone had carven face,
a stature made, like steel.
And the stone man did not smile, i fear
and meekly came I by
to lay me down on his cold feet
else God-foresook I die.
A puppy has a simple heart,
An Angel loves to fly,
The angel saw me sleeping therem
and carried me away.
The angels name was Jophiel,
His Armor made of Gold,
His hair was brown, his eyes were blue,
His heart was warm and kind,
He hadn't found me yet, and as he rested on this star,
I slept, the stone man walked away
to where more bone-fish are.
When I awoke his golden wings of ivory,
rainbow, pearl, were wrapt around him
in a heart, and he said, "You're a girl!"
He was asleep, they sleep sometimes,
he had a golden scroll,
His robe was red, his skin was warm
I knelt and sniffed his warm
warm arm
and we a pair of lovely ones did color
this gray scene,
"He Said, "This place needs daffiodils,
these stone ones they are mean."
I growled at first to tell him that
I had a broken heart,
Then whined and I looked awhile
Then joyful I did Bark.
For at his foot a hazel tree,
the only life did spring,
and where he lay the grasses grew,
on the stone earth so mean.
I looked and looked on that I saw
for angels are marvelous fair.
a Halo round his hair.
I loved, I lookt, I loved, I looked,
The angel's eyes were closed, and rare, oh rare--
he lay asleep wrapped neath great wings,
great feathers beating still,
i sniffed around his feet
and cried till he began to smile!
His eyebrows raised, his eyes the ope'd---
And Lord, twas wondrous fair!----
And had a fine angelic face and
I did sit and stare.
When Angel moved a glow came forth
alive, on that dead star, and
where that ice red roses
grew, and earth thawed warm.
The angel itched his head and smiled
Then said, "Art Thou a Maiden Wild?
For By God thou Art a Girl."
I barked.  He laughing took me up
and nuzzled my warm wet ears
and tears and smiles and sniffles came
and he allayed my fears.
I was a dog, I could not talk,
but bark and nuzzle there
and I forgot about the star---
Twas heaven in his hair.
The angel, he was Jophiel, he took me by the hand,
we walked as though in paradise that dry
and cruel land,
"I've seen your man of stone," he said,
"The devil's in this place."
"And would that we might leave it--- I
will call on God's Fair Grace."
We wa;led, and as we walked the trees and
rivers came to life, and color came.
He said "My child you are to be my wife."
I was a puppy and not a maid, but how
my heart was true----!
He said, "Yon there's a place for us.  We'll rest, and
fall in love."
I barked.  and then he said some words
and I became a girl, no other girl but
I myself, a maiden, with long hair.
My eyes were bluem my skin was
pale, my beauty was angelic grace
and comeliness was in my face.
He carried me, he wedded me,
He made this girl His wife-----
God had condemned my soul to die,
But Lo!  Jophiel saved my life.!
The End.
